How to Make Cat Food

I would like to share with you how I make cat food for my cats. My reasons for the type of cat food I make are as follows:

·     High in protein and low in carbohydrates

·     Dehydrated at low temperatures, not cooked or baked which is done by all commercial pet foods that contain grains. Dry heat destroys many enzymes and nutrients necessary for a carnivores health. Remember a housecat is a domesticated FEROCIOUS CARNIVORE! Not adapted to digesting plant material as dogs have been. Cats have no dietary need for carbohydrates from plants, their natural diet being almost exclusively from animal proteins & fats.

·     GRAIN FREE – If you see any grain listed in the first 3 ingredients – put it back on the shelf and look for a different brand. Cats have no dietary need for carbohydrates from plants. Most grains used in pet food are by-products of human food production and we all know how healthy those products are!

·     I want my cats to be as healthy as possible so I can enjoy their companionship as long as possible. Making cat food instead of buying commercial dry kibble or wet food is more cost effective and it has allowed me to keep my cats at their ideal weight, prevent disease and live a longer, healthier life.

As with any recipe if you do not like one ingredient leave it out and add something else:

This makes about 5 pounds worth of cat food.

·     2 lbs of chicken (or turkey, or beef) – I use boneless/skinless because it is easier to process in a food processor if needed. Boneless/skinless thighs are the most inexpensive for this recipe.

·     1 can of mackerel, sardines or pink salmon- This provides Omega 3 oils and will not only make your kitty a healthy cat but his coat will be shiny! You can also add some extra virgin olive oil if you would like an even healthier cat with less odor!

·     1 cup cooked brown rice (optional)- you could substitute another grain here such as millet or quinoa if desired.

·     Whole milk plain yogurt 2 tablespoons (optional)- this is to aid in digestion of the protein and fat. You can substitute low fat if desired or nonfat.

·     1 whole egg (optional) I use a whole egg because it provides complete amino acids for building muscle tissue. If you have a cat with a history of urinary tract disease, you may want to leave out the egg as they are high in phosphorus which may contribute to crystals forming in the urinary tract.

·     Himalayan salt- This is pink salt from Pakistan which contains trace elements beneficial to health not found elsewhere such as molybdenum.

·     2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil- For both Omega 3 & 6 Fatty Acids as well as vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps destroy free radicals E E is is an an anti anti–oxoxididantant and and will will help help maintain maintain healthy healthy cells cells..
